Saturday night Dave and I were
supposed to go to Red Lobster to
celebrate Christmas
because we hadn’t had a time just to ourselves to do that. So I came over Saturday night, and when I
arrived there was a trail of red roses leading up the driveway to a white bag
and candles. I pick up the white bag and
realize there were more flowers. So I
continued to pick those up which lead to a ladder. I climbed up the ladder onto the roof and saw
the table for two with candles and more roses along with the grill that Dave
had set up. I sat down and music started
to play.
He
brought up our salads (balancing both while trying to climb up the ladder) and
started the grill and we started to eat.
After the salad he made salmon (which is my FAVORITE), green beans (LOVE),
and rice(LOVE) with a delicious recipes from Food Network (the channel I watch
obsessively). We ate and enjoyed the
salmon. The Dave asks, “Did you get me
anything for Christmas?” I didn’t…so he said, “Well, I just wrote you a
letter.” He starts reading the letter to
me by candlelight, and in it, he says he tries to express his feelings for me-but
he said that it was harder than he thought it would be. It also explained the significance of the
music we were listening to-it was a c.d. he had made me and the songs progress
from the chase, to infatuation, and then to love. He also talked about God’s love for me, how
he knew that that was something he could never completely have for me(because
God’s love is perfection and unconditional and amazing…etc), but that he would
always try to achieve that kind of love.
He read me Psalm 121, which talks about God always watching over you and
watching your coming and your going.
Then Coco appeared on the roof…and in
my mind I wasn’t even wondering how
he got of the roof-I was just happy to see him.
So Dave tells me to pick Coco up, and
the ring box in tied to his back. Dave
got down on one knee and said, “Christe Ann Brickey, nothing would honor me
more in this world than for you to be my wife.
Will you marry me?” Through tears I said YES. J
We
hugged for a while…and then he said, “Now that you’ve said yes, I’ve got
something else for you.” He pulls out this THICK envelope. And I’m like, “Is that my list of duties?”
and he was like, “I would need more paper for that.” J He opens it up and starts reading to
me. The first was a letter from Tyler,
his sister-in-law and a friend of mine.
Then letters from his brother Phil, John (brother-in-law), his sister
Susan, his oldest brother Steve, and then finally one from his dad, and one
from his mom. He had asked everyone in
his family to write me letters welcoming me into his family. It was soo amazing to hear from them. Some of the had me in tears-while others were
hilarious! I got the “Top 10 recommendations when marrying a Le Peau” from his
brother-in-law and thanks from his sister for loving his even the not so good
parts of Dave (“Le Peaus can be arrogant and loud. Le Peaus can be biting and mean (we’re
defensive). And worse yet… Le Peaus are
moody.” – from Susan’s letter) I love his family so much, and through these
letters I realized how much they love me too.
After Dave finished the letters we
went downstairs to meet his excited roommates (the four guys who give me so
much crap from being over all the time—it was sooo adorable!) and have
desert. For desert he made me fruit with
a yummy glaze (again from Food Network!) and ice cream on top. He asked me, “Why are we having fruit for
desert?” And I said, “Because we eat fruit for desert in Korea?” And he said,
“Yup.”
It was a very thoughtful and memorable
night. J The next morning when we told the story at
church everyone ate up every detail…and I think they crowned Dave the new King
of “best engagement ever”. At least
that’s what he’ll be in my book! |
